New research shows AI progressing across German firms, with a rigorous, structured approach to governance, validation and implementation
DUSSELDORF, April 28, 2026: Audit and accounting firms in Germany are advancing their adoption of artificial intelligence with a strong emphasis on quality, control and professional standards, according to a new study from IDC, sponsored by Caseware.
Findings from the global IDC study, The Future of Audit and Accounting in the AI Era, show that 63%* of German firms have already embedded AI into firm strategy, are using it in select functions or have active pilot projects underway. 68%* of firms say they plan to adopt or expand their use of AI technologies within the next two years, indicating continued momentum as firms build on early deployments.
Together, these findings suggest that AI adoption in Germany is progressing steadily, with a focus on getting implementation right rather than moving quickly.
A rigorous approach to AI adoption
In Germany, firms are taking a structured and disciplined approach to integrating AI into audit and accounting workflows. The focus is on embedding AI in a way that is reliable, auditable and aligned with professional standards. This reflects a market where precision and technical rigor shape how new technologies are adopted.
“In Germany, firms are approaching AI with a high degree of discipline,” said David Marquis, chief executive officer at Caseware. “The focus is not just on what AI can do, but how it performs in practice, how it is governed and how it holds up under scrutiny. That’s why we have invested in building a smarter, more powerful, better governed AI platform to support firms' adoption and growth.”
Audit quality and professional judgment are both in focus
The research highlights a balanced perspective among German firms.
49%* of German respondents agree that AI can enhance audit quality, signaling confidence in its ability to improve coverage and support analysis.
At the same time, 41%* agree or strongly agree that AI could risk undermining professional judgment, reinforcing the importance of maintaining human oversight.
This close alignment between perceived benefit and risk points to a market that is actively interrogating how AI should be used, rather than adopting it uncritically.
Validation and control are central to deployment
German firms place strong emphasis on validating AI outputs and maintaining accountability.
64%* of respondents say auditors should always validate AI outputs relied upon in reaching professional conclusions. This reinforces a model where AI supports professional judgment but remains subject to clear oversight and verification.
Trading performance for security
Globally, 55%** of respondents are willing or very willing to accept some reduction in AI performance in exchange for stronger security or safety measures. In Germany, that figure is 51%* - just below the global average, suggesting a market that is broadly aligned with international sentiment on this question, but fractionally more resistant to any compromise on capability.
Talent remains a structural constraint
While adoption is progressing, the availability of technical talent continues to influence the pace of implementation.
41%* of German firms cite lack of technical talent as the primary barrier to AI adoption, underscoring the challenge of combining accounting expertise with AI capability.
This is driving demand for solutions that reduce technical complexity and integrate more naturally into existing workflows.
A deliberate path to AI maturity
The findings suggest that Germany is progressing toward AI maturity through a deliberate and structured approach. Rather than prioritizing speed, firms are focusing on building the governance, processes and capabilities needed to support AI at scale over the long term.
